Being that I am too overbooked and underslept to really write something coherent of my own, here’s another quote – I think it fits quite nicely. (And yes, I did actually read Shopenhauer. Because I took three semesters of philosophy as a subsidiary subject in my studies). In the original:

Es kann hiermit so weit kommen, dass vielleicht manchen,

zumal in hypochondrischer Verstimmung, die Welt,

von der ästhetischen Seite betrachtet, als ein Karikaturenkabinett,

von der intellektuellen, als ein Narrenhaus,

und von der moralischen, als eine Gaunerherberge erscheint.

Wird solche Verstimmung bleibend; so entsteht Misanthropie.
