No impact man!

September 4, 2009

Hello dear readers, remember me? I’m sorry! I initially didn’t want to interrupt my Cretan adventure run, but then I thought – I haven’t continued it since 2 and a half weeks ago, it might be ok to go ahead with something else. But I do want to continue it eventually! It’s just that I thought I would have time back in France, like last time, to write all day. Turns out I had zero time to write. And then back here there’s all the apprenticeship stuff to take care of, celebrations to be had with friends who either finished their studies as well or are moving away (or both), and even possibly … a moving out of the apartment. More to that later.

So I took the change of interrupting the saga, because it’s been so long since I’ve written that even wordpress itself has changed. And this was supposed to be a quick bite of a post. Doesn’t look like that now. The topic: No impact man!

It’s probably not the most compelling eco-film out there, but quite possibly the most personal. To check out his project blog, go here. I was in the mood to post this thanks to the blogs of my friends, who also brought some very exciting movies to my attention. To see Jo’s list, go here and to see Marc’s list, go here.

If I ever stroke up an interest in living green, my dear intelligent concerned responsible readers (who are also oh-so pretty!), I must urge you to read “Ready, Set, Green” by the authors of Treehugger.com. Now don’t be afraid, it’s not just some bunch of hippie crap. This book shows many many many many many MANY ways to live eco-friendlier – and here’s the best part – without giving up your lifestyle. True story.

Quick hit on a new film

July 28, 2009

Hello! I interrupt the endless search of the right clinic to do my 1 1/2 years of psychiatric duty that stands before me, to bring you the news of a new movie I’ve heard of today. It was supposed to be a documentary about one model’s career, but turned out to be a documentary uncovering the less glamorous parts of the modelling industry.

Many girls, especially young ones and especially now with certain shows emphasizing this aspect, think that to be a model means to be pretty, wear nice clothes and earn good money. This movie also brings to mind that there are photographers that sleep with the models and regularly over-cross boundaries, that designers make clothes that fall straight – i.e. only fit pre-pubescent girls – and that even though nobody likes to admit it, the standard is anorexic. Plus, the money isn’t that great, you get replaced in an instant and the work hours are ridiculous. Still, it’s a sneak peek behind the scenes for anyone interested in fashion. I give you: Picture Me.

goddammit

July 3, 2009

Just saw a trailer for a new movie coming in October (in the states) via a french blog – and goddammit, I am pissed. Probably more than I should be, I know. Look:

Yes, it looks like a good creepy story. Yes, there are good actors in it. Yes, the visual effects are surely impressive. BUT: I am sick and tired of psychiatric hospitals and mental illness being portrayed as such whack jobs. Sure, it plays in the past. But how many people will think that we still keep people behind bars, all wear white, etc. That these patients are just waiting for their chance to break out and attack you. Even the “criminally insane” are humans. They don’t just go haywire or buck wild. Goddammit.

Speaking of buck wild: The BF and I went to see Ice Age 3 yesterday, and I love the new character, Buck. The movie was funny as always and they managed to not repeat themselves or make it boring. All new ideas and – what I hadn’t expected – many many tangents to other movies! My head was exploding with references! The only annoying thing were all the women in the audience going “awwww” and “sooo cute!” all the time. I personally saw the kitsch overload as irony, but whatever.

Other movies I’m waiting to see include: Brüno, Inglorious Basterds and possibly Food, Inc.

I plan a big post series on the inner workings of a psych job, where I can detail all this. But because I’ll have to sit down and work those out, I won’t be able to write them until after my exam (and the following vacation). But I do have a lot to say on this subject!
